Quarantine: Week 1

We started off the quarantine, recovering from the flu. I actually think it helped that we had no time to prepare or worry. I was too sick for any of that so we just rolled into the quarantine like it was the weekend. Luke had been out of town for the previous 10 days so compared to being sick with the flu with him out of town, the quarantine just didn’t feel like a huge deal at the time.

By Monday night, I had my wits enough to start panicking. Jk, I’ve remained calm as a cucumber this whole time. What, you mean you haven’t?

We came up with some rules together in the hopes of a smoother few weeks (that I’m pretty sure is now going to be months, but anywho.) If you are a fellow mother reading this and you are (mistakenly) very impressed that we came up with a list of rules together, let me drop some reality, 90% of the suggested rules involved poop. They only started to take this a little seriously when I made them sign it.

By Wednesday, we had about 1 hour of “school.” This involved their new homeschool teacher scrambling around like a mad woman trying to understand exactly what they’re supposed to be doing for the next _ weeks all while they asked me repeatedly, “What’s next?” Listen, my kids go to a Montessori school, I’m pretty sure that the basis of this style of learning is independence, lets hope so because otherwise we are all doomed.
I have never been more grateful to live where we live. We are in a great spot for bike riding and golf carting. Our back yard is also huge (like way to big to properly maintain) which makes it great for kids to destroy. One of our neighbors is caring for a goat right now and we got to meet him this week.
This little bird flew into the house. I will never forget watching Fleet scramble to cover the windows with blankets so that the bird wouldn’t fly into them and injure itself.

The kids have done some art projects this week. This has been fun but also somewhat exhausting. Here is the Marshmallow mask that Fleet made. Luke and Elle both made similar ones. In case you don’t know, Marshmallow is a DJ who I guess all the kids are liking these days. IDK, I’m over here mourning Kenny Rogers. What a musical great he was.

One of the weirdest things I did this week was to pack COVID-19 test kits. A friend of mine works for a company that supplies kits for various illness and also does the testing. They are working hard to get tests out there so we got together one night, washed our hands 800 times, stayed 6 feet away from each other and packed some tests. It was an experience that I don’t think I will ever forget.

I invite you all to surround yourselves with as much positivity as you can find. This is a scary time that is full of uncertainty and I am being very cautious about what I consume on social media, especially.

I also invite you all to have some virtual happy hours with friends. We might need to social distance but we don’t have to be disconnected, thank goodness. I had two zoom calls with friends this week and I highly recommend it. And yes, we are fully social distancing because we are still recovering from the flu and various other illnesses (we’ve been struggling since January) AND I don’t want to be a part of the people who are spreading this disease and infecting others, especially those who are most vulnerable, like my own parents.

And finally, if you can support small businesses, now is the time to show up. Buy gift cards, tip big, order take out, don’t cancel reservations…whatever you can do. My family is fully supported by two small businesses. We are scrambling to turn Luke’s tours into gift cards rather than refunds. If there are ways we can support you, please comment below.

There are some really beautiful ideas being shared right now…

Stay Safe Everyone XO, Lauren
